Active Flag School Renewal
Welcome to Inchicronan Central NS (Crusheen National School) Active School flag renewal blog. Our pupils, parents, staff and student active committee enjoyed participating in this process.
Active Schools March 2022
At the beginning of our active schools journey we elected our Active Schools Committee. One pupil was voted to represent each class. Our roles are to attend meetings, feedback information to classes and to help organize and lead Activities.
Our first job was to survey the student population to understand what we enjoyed about being active and what we could do to be more active – we had lots of really great suggestions. We also sent a survey to parents to see what their
thoughts were. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to complete them. All of this took place in November in tandem with our refresher of the ‘Food Dudes’ where we tasted and enjoy many different fruits and vegetables. We
also started our active homework. We put together a chart of possible options for parents and kids to pick from, sent it home and we all got busy doing various activities including jumping jacks in the kitchen, lunges in the hall, football in
the garden, hovering, and walking the dog a lot more. It went really well and so over the Christmas holidays, families were encouraged to send in photos of you all being active together in whatever way you could. As a whole school we have been doing ‘Walk on Wednesdays’ which involves each class taking time out from their day to go for a walk and talk together. In our 4 th and 5 th class we have begun running laps of our local pitch. Mr Gantley encouraged us to run at our own pace and see how many laps we could manage. We have continued with this and have moved from an average of 3 laps each to now doing 7 & eight laps. We have really surprised ourselves with how much
more we can achieve by being active on a regular basis. Since returning in January, we have begun to have active breaks during class, standing up more, moving and dancing more , getting extra PE time and we have also introduced our ‘Active Lines’ where a class leader takes us through 3 minutes of on the spot exercises each day as we line up after break-times. As restrictions are lifting all the time, we have organized for classes from Juniors to 6 th classes to go to Gymnastics classes once a week, over a 4 week period, starting in March. We are really looking forward to this as it’s an
activity very few of us have done before. We will also be resuming our swimming lessons later in the year which will be great.

20 Hour Challenge + Sponsorship Card - May 2022
This school year we have been placing a huge emphasis on getting and keeping active throughout the classes from Junior Infants right up to 6 th class. We have been doing extra running and activities on the school yard and up at
the pitch. All the classes have been doing exercises after their breaks, taking active breaks throughout the day and even doing ‘Active Homework’ as we seek to promote more exercise and create healthy habits. This has all been part of
our ambition to renew our Active Flag for Crusheen N.S. Another part of this renewal is to take part in a fundraising initiative to raise money for extra P.E. equipment. This has led us to our 20 Hour Challenge, a
challenge for the kids to exercise 1 hour a day over the next 4 school weeks. With your help and encouragement we are hoping pupils can make the efforts to complete their sponsorship cards whilst being active and having fun. This money
will go towards replenishing our P.E. equipment within the school along with purchasing more fun equipment all the pupils can use.
The Active Schools Committee look forward to working together with the parent body, Parents Council and of course all the pupils in making this initiative a huge success. Your help and generosity is much appreciated.

Food Dudes Week 8th - 12th November
Our school was delighted to take part in Food Dudes which is an award winning curriculum-linked evidence-based healthy eating programme, developed to encourage children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. It is based on repeated tastings of fresh fruit and vegetables, rewards and positive role models.
Our school with Crusheen Playgroup were successful in securing Imagination Playground equipment in recent years, funding for these resources was secured through the Healthy Ireland Fund and administered through Clare CYPSC. Part of the application and agreement was to submit a report on the usage which will help evaluate the effectiveness of various funding initiatives. Please find attached a report form which was completed and submitted in March 2022
1st & 2nd Class using their imagination with playground bricks - creating a beautiful Christmas tree and what a lovely sofa to relax on after all the exercise. Well done.
The SPAR FAI Primary School 5s will therefore take a new format for 2022. The goal is to provide every child in 4th, 5th and 6th class in your school the opportunity to participate in football. Under the new format, schools are asked to run their own 5-a-side competitions for pupils in their school, removing the need for schools and teachers to travel to play fixtures.

School Tour To ULAC - 3rd to 6th Class School Tour
We departed the school at 9:05am on Monday, May 23rd to go to UL Adventure Centre in Killaloe. It took us about 40 minutes to get there. When we arrived, we were split into two groups, 5th and 6th in one and 3rd and 4th in the other. Chris, one of the instructors, explained the rules to us. He told us that 5th and 6th were going to be doing the land activities first, while 3rd and 4th were going straight to the water activities. We were split into groups of three for the land activities. We did team games, high rope climbing and archery. First two groups did the high ropes, while the other one team did the team games and archery. Then we swapped over. We all had a great time doing the land activities. After finishing the land activities, we had lunch and some people then put on their wetsuits in preparation for the
water activities. In the water we had to wear wetsuits, life-jackets, helmets and old footwear. The activities included sail-boating, kayaking and canoeing and stand up paddle boarding. We walked out to the paddleboard, went out on the lane and tied it to a water buoy and all jumped in. One of the highlights of the day was getting to jump off the pier into the water! The sun shone for most of the day and we had a very memorable time!

Camogie News
The schools camogie championship resumed in late April where we found ourselves placed in
Division 1b as a result of a number of successful years prior to Covid. This was a very challenging
division with some of our players playing schools championship camogie for the very first time.
Our first match was against Inagh NS/Cloonanaha NS. We fought bravely but were outplayed by a
much stronger side. We then played Clonlara NS. We dug deep to hold them scoreless for a good
period of the game. They came out on top in the end but we were very happy with our performance
for large periods of the game.
Finally, we played Ruan NS/Toonagh NS. We displayed some very good teamwork and battled
bravely in very poor weather conditions. Ruan NS/Toonagh NS were very dominant throughout the
game but we never gave up and continued to battle all the way up until the final whistle.
We are happy that our panel is growing and we have lots of girls eager to play competitive camogie.
These matches, in such a high division, were very good experience for us and we have learnt a lot. A
big shout out to our supporters, parents, mentors and trainers who kept us going with their words of
encouragement throughout all our training sessions and games! We look forward to competing again

Hurling news
On Thursday May 5th Crusheen boys played Knockaneen National School in our 2nd group games of the Cumann na mBunscol competition. It was a wet and cold day. The match started at 12.30 and we scored a goal and 2 points, Knockaneen scored 2 goals and 1 point. The half time whistle blew and Mr Gantley brought us into the dugout for a half time chat. We came back onto the pitch with confidence, ready to face the second half, but sadly we lost in the end to a very strong Knockanean outfit on a scoreline 4:5 to 1:4.
On Friday the 13th of May Crusheen boys played Ruan/Toonagh in the final group match of the Cumann na mBun Scoil competition. We were excited as a win would mean we could go through to the semi final. All the boys from 6th, 5th and 4th classes travelled by bus to Ruan pitch. Throw in was at 9.45 and we played very well in the first half, we had the wind at our backs and went in at half time with a score of 5-2 to 2-2 in our favour. The second half was a challenge as the wind had picked up and with a last minute goal from Ruan/Toonagh our hopes of playing in Cusack Park were dashed. The final score was 6-5 to 5-4. Everyone was devastated, we had played very well as a team and had tried our best, unfortunately we are out of the competition but in reality we are delighted to be getting back playing competitive games with the school
