Pupils put an orange in water.. What happened? It floated. Then we peeled the orange and put it back into the water. What happened? It sank. Pupils concluded that orange peel is full of trapped air bubbles, which makes the orange light for its size, so the unpeeled orange floated. Without the peel the orange is heavy for its size, so it sank.
Many thanks to Bernard from Roche, Ennis who came in to talk to us about his work and the work that goes on in Roche. The pupils had great fun looking at all the instruments!!!
3rd & 4th classes were delighted to get a visit this week from Pat Quinn who works with the Irish Aviation Authority. Pat spoke to the class about his experience and knowledge in the work that he does and also about Engineering and Science in general. Pupils greatly enjoyed his visit and had some wonderful questions for Pat on the day!!
Design a boat!!
Pupils in 3rd & 4th investigated how water pushes upwards with a force called ‘upthrust’.
We explored how the shape of a ‘boat’ affects the weight (passengers/cargo) it can hold. The more water that the boat displaces the more it will float and therefore the more weight it can take.
Here pupils investigated how tin foil, when laid flat might float on water.
Here pupils now designed and made boats out of the tin foil given, with the aim of making a boat that could hold the most weight.
Pupils had great fun testing how many block their boats could hold!!
