Heritage in Schools

We welcomed Mark Wilson to our classroom today. Mark was very interesting and we learned a lot about the history  and geography of Ireland. Mark showed us his collection of hats, many of which were very old and from different countries. Then we looked at his collection of hammers. We were given the opportunity to make a face from wood and little pieces of branches. We really enjoyed Mark's visit to our school.

We welcomed many of our grandparents to our school today. We performed a short drama in Irish for them, we played some tunes, some of us danced a set before we played card games together. Mary Angela's grandad even played a tune for us. Fr, Damien gave all the grandparents a special blessing as well as celebrating the Feast of St. Blaise with us by blessing our throats. We enjoyed seeing our grandparents in our classroom!

For the past few weeks, lots of pupils in our school have been bringing in artifacts and showing them to each class. We are finding it very interesting to talk about when the artifact was used, how it was used and how old it is. Thanks to everyone who has brought items in so far!

We have been practising our hurling and camogie skills for the past few weeks. As well as taking part in the indoor hurling and camogie competitions, we have been training each week in school. When the weather doesn't allow us to get out, we play hockey in the hall.

Today Josephine told us the Parable of the Sower. It was very interesting to listen to our different opinions about the story.

We learned about the many traditions associated with St. Brigid's Day. We read accounts of people from long ago and we learned about St. Brigid's life. We were fortunate that Mary Angela and Conor remembered to bring in rushes so that we could make our own St. Brigid's crosses!
